Safa Tempo Electric Vehicles in Nepal

Safa Tempos are electrically powered three-wheeled vehicles that have been part of Kathmandu’s cityscape since the 1990s. More than 650 vehicles transport thousands of people every day through the Nepalese capital, quietly and without emissions. They are among the earliest large-scale e-mobility projects worldwide and are largely built and operated locally. Particularly noteworthy is the high proportion of female drivers, who earn an independent and stable income through this work. Safa Tempos help to reduce severe urban air pollution and run exclusively on electricity generated from hydropower. At the same time, they strengthen the local economy and create jobs. The project demonstrates how ecological mobility can have social and economic benefits.
